The Rule Explained
The DOT's 24-hour rule (14 CFR Part 259) requires airlines to either:
- Allow free cancellation within 24 hours of booking, OR
- Hold fares for 24 hours without payment
Most airlines choose option 1. This means you can book, think it over, and cancel for a full refund if you change your mind.
? The Rule Applies When:
- Ticket is for travel 7+ days in the future
- Booking is on a US airline OR departing from US
- You cancel within 24 hours of booking (not flight time)
? The Rule Does NOT Apply When:
- Flight is under 7 days away
- Booking is on foreign airline, departing from outside US
- More than 24 hours have passed since booking
